As we head into the second half of the UN Ocean Decade, we are excited to announce that the Canada node of the Global ECOP Program has a new administrative home within the Students On Ice Foundation (SOI), supported by the Blue Futures Pathways program. SOI and ECOP Canada believe that empowering Canada’s ocean workforce is achieved by sharing intergenerational ideas, creating access to opportunities in diverse communities, fostering innovation, and supporting a global network of ECOPs navigating early career challenges. This partnership unites two programs with a shared vision of supporting workforce development and increasing awareness of, and access to, career opportunities in Canada’s Sustainable Blue Economy. SOI is thrilled to lead ECOP Canada’s national and international partnerships in support of the UN Ocean Decade.
Their current work empowers ECOPs through leadership and professional development opportunities. Additionally, they provide networking opportunities, enabling ECOPs to connect with peers and amplify their voices in shaping the Canadian and global ocean sector. An ECOP Canada ambassador program was recently launched, offering access to funding and further opportunities for ECOPs residing in Canada. ECOP Canada’s new Coordination Unit is led by Volita Yego (Photo 1); an ECOP with a background in law, human rights and a passion for the intersection between human rights and climate action. She has worked in ocean conservation and youth empowerment, coordinating and managing programs that inspire and equip young leaders to address environmental challenges.
We would also like to highlight Tara Mascarenhas (Photo 2) and Moronke Harris (Photo 3), both ECOPs and members of the ECOP Canada Advisory Committee, who recently received the prestigious King Charles III Coronation Medal in 2024 and March 2025 respectively for their exceptional contributions to the ocean sector. This medal recognizes individuals who have made a lasting impact in various fields across Canada. Their achievement is a testament to the growing recognition of the critical role that ECOPs play in leadership and in shaping a sustainable blue future.
