International Open Science Training with PICES Advisory Panel on Early Career Ocean Professionals (AP-ECOP)

📢 Announcing the upcoming International Open Science Training across 3 sessions in September and October!

This free virtual training is co-organized by the Advisory Panel on Early Career Ocean Professionals (AP-ECOP) and other PICES – North Pacific Marine Science Organization Expert Groups. It aims to build effective international collaborations for ocean sustainability and has been endorsed as a UN Ocean Decade Activity. The training consists of three interactive and engaging virtual sessions, scheduled a few weeks prior to the 2024 PICES Annual Meeting in Honolulu, USA:

1) International Collaboration & Science Diplomacy: we will explore – What an effective and successful international collaboration looks like across different countries; Key considerations when initiating international scientific projects with colleagues from different cultures; How ECOPs can contribute to Science Diplomacy and what experience do they need to succeed in this field; and Strategies for maintaining effective communication to foster long-term relationships. 2) International Data Management: we will delve into advanced skills in data governance, including data sharing protocols, interoperability, and compliance with international standards; Data management best practices; and Challenges and gaps that exist between stakeholders generating data and end-users.

3) Science Communications: we will look into effective forms and formats of science communication for reaching non-scientific audiences; How to create transparent outputs to inform policy and society change; and Advice and tips for communicating as or with non-native English speakers.

Participants will delve into real world examples of strengthening international scientific cooperation and building trust across national borders by integrating culturally diverse perspectives and practices, with a particular emphasis on the North Pacific region. Each session will be joined by four experts from Canada, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and the United States of America. The training is open to individuals at any career stage and from any country, encouraging dialogue, active learning, and dynamic engagement.
